What if you woke up one day to a war outside your bedroom window? That's the reality that 22 year old Mark Andersen has been living in for the better half of his teenage years: in the year 203X, scarcity is almost all he's known.
He wants to fill his father's shoes and become a surgeon to can take care of the town, which is hard to do when they can barely afford the next shipment of medication. Even still—they find a way to get by, up until the moment that Loyalist soldiers appear at Mark's front door and take him away to the war.
What if pain and loss is all you know? Captain Abel has been serving in the Loyalist Army for seven years, and he's seen it all. The only thing that he's missing is a reason to live when the fighting is over—if it's ever over.
It wasn't always like this—he'd lived a normal, happy life once, just like every other kid. But he can never go back to the day when he was just eighteen, staring at the sunset over the hill with his best friend.
If you knew you could die tomorrow, who would be the first person you wanted to say your goodbyes to? Whether it was your brother or sister, your mother or father, your nephew or cousin, or the kid across the street you've been in love with for years—nobody in this world has wanted to pass away without feeling loved. That is the Lament of the Firstborn—a generation of youth born into collapse, never once given a chance at a "fair" world.
